Cook V's Cornell

Cook, one of the guys on American Idol, did a version of Chris Cornell doing a version of Michael Jacksons "Billie Jean" And, on YouTube, it would seem that there is a load of commentary on the Cornell video, a bit of healthy rivalry betwixt the Cook fans and the Cornell fans... I know where my bread is buttered... Chris Cornell all the way

Chris Cornell

Cook did an amazing version, a really good version, slightly smoother than the one above, Cornells.. But then - that's why we loved SoundGarden, Temple of the Dog..etc, Right?

BUT! [isn't there ALWAYS a big BUT] David Cook makes me shiver with his vocal performance, pretty bloody good, if you will...

Pear Shaped

...Once again, things continue to take on that pear shaped kinda look here, at torment towers...

DNS.. like street signs for the web "where's my email server... oh, over there" Yeah - well. That's when you actually renew your domains

Here, we prefer to let them expire and then embark on "the chase" the game to get them back... Unlike M$ we don't have 3BILLION people using that domain name, but, we have 120 and all of them suddenly couldn't receive email... In real world terms - it was like coming in on a monday morning to a whole pre-school of screaming kids!...

Moral of the story? ...Not sure really

Anyway - enough about that!!... So, went to Normandy last weekend [easter] not bad, not bad at all.. Lots of driving! But took a few photos that made me smile!..

You can see them here

omaha

Platform4Art is another project that i'm about to embark on - i'm trying to organise a "Tube Photography" based exhibition on a London tube platform [Gloucester Road] ...so, watch this space for that!...

Flickr threesixtyfive managed to pump out a preliminary book i'm not sure that there will be another one, but we will see... It took quite a while to organise and get all the photos in and five people have bought one, so, the whole "effort to worth it" ratio is a bit off... which is fine, I don't mind.

Immi more popular than UK prime minister! - 01.02.08

A recent article about ‘QDOS’, a system that measures an individual’s ‘digital status’ in the UK.

According to a recent 'QDOS' report (a system that measures an individual's 'digital status' in the UK) 9 out of 10 of the most digitally prolific personalities in the UK are musicians, and whilst you’d be forgiven for assuming someone such as Bono would be number one, you’d also be wrong! According to QDOS, the number one most digitally prolific person in the UK is non other than Miss Imogen Heap!

"A QDOS score is comprised of four main components – popularity, impact, activity and individuality. Each component is scored separately and these are combined to form a total QDOS score. Popularity measures the number of people one engages with online and the size of their personal network, impact is based on the number of people who listen/read/view/comment when an individual blogs/posts online, activity comprises the total of one’s digital activity including shopping, blogging, banking, chatting etc, and individuality is how unique one is in the digital world based on their name, age and lifestyle."

(Tony Blair and Gordon Brown came in at numbers 12 and 25 respectively).

Big thanks to everyone out there who has help Immi become number one!

Introduced just over 25 years ago, the ugly truth about our plastic bag addiction is that society's consumption rate is now estimated at well over 500,000,000,000 (that's 500 billion) plastic bags annually, or almost 1 million per minute.

# Single-use bags made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) are the main culprit. Once brought into existence to tote your purchases, they'll accumulate and persist on our planet for up to 1,000 years.

# Australians alone consume about 6.9 billion plastic bags each year, that's 326 per person. According to Australia's Department of Environment, an estimated 49,600,000 annually end up as litter.

# In 2001, Ireland used 1.2 billion disposable plastic bags, or 316 per person. An extremely successful plastic bag tax, or PlasTax, introduced in 2002 reduced consumption by 90%.

# According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually. An estimated 12 million barrels of oil is required to make that many plastic bags.

# Four out of five grocery bags in the US are now plastic.

# Plastic bags cause over 100,000 sea turtle and other marine animal deaths every year when animals mistake them for food.

# In a dramatic move to stem a tide of 60,000 metric tons of plastic bag and plastic utensil waste per year, Taiwan banned both last year.

# According to the BBC, only 1 in 200 plastic bags in the UK are recycled.

# According to the WSJ Target, the second-largest retailer in the U.S., purchases 1.8 billion bags a year.

# As part of Clean Up Australia Day, in one day nearly 500,000 plastic bags were collected. Unfortunately, each year in Australia an estimated 50,000,000 plastic bags end up as litter.

Photography 101 - Lenses and Focus [DPS]

Welcome to the second lesson in Photography 101 - A Basic Course on the Camera by regular contributer Neil Creek. In this series, we cover all the basics of camera design and use. We talk about the ‘exposure triangle’: shutter speed, aperture and ISO. We talk about focus, depth of field and sharpness, as well as how lenses work, what focal lengths mean and how they put light on the sensor. We also look at the camera itself, how it works, what all the options mean and how they affect your photos.

This week’s lesson is Lenses and Focus....[cont'd]

Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Al Di Meola and Lenny White

Tour Sure to Be "THE Jazz Event of 2008" (Beyond Jazz)

Return to Forever, one of the most influential groups of the 1970s, have long heard calls from their many fans for a reunion tour. Now those calls have been answered, with the classic lineup of keyboardist Chick Corea, bassist Stanley Clarke, guitarist Al Di Meola and drummer Lenny White planning a tour across the U.S. and Europe that will be their first performances together in more than 25 years.

The foursome is expected to play 40 to 50 dates across the U.S. and Europe, featuring the classic music from their four chart-topping albums. "It’s been a long time coming," says founder Chick Corea, "and I think it's going to be a blast! We plan to take the songs from the albums we made in the '70s and just play them like they’ve never been played before."

"In retrospect, the '70s were a very powerful time in instrumental music," Stanley Clarke adds. "We’re going to go out and play our music as honestly as we did then, and it will be a great thing for all of us."

Return to Forever helped create and define fusion, a new genre that brought multitudes of rock 'n' roll fans into the jazz world for the first time. Their influence is evident today in many musical genres, from the hip-hop samplings of Dr. Dre and Lupe Fiasco to a litany of jam bands to techno and prog bands.

A special Return to Forever anthology featuring remixed and remastered tracks from the classic albums 'Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy', 'Where Have I Known You Before', 'No Mystery' and 'Romantic Warrior' will be released to coincide with the tour.

Al Di Meola says, "This is something we’ve talked about for close to 30 years... how’s that? 30 years! We’ve come close a few times, but finally the timing was right."

"We all felt the time was right to come back on a grand scale, raise the bar again and show people what serious music is really about," Lenny White concludes.

Ted Kurland Associates is the booking agency for 2008's Return to Forever tour, about which Russ Davis, Program Director for Beyond Jazz on XM Satellite Radio and the Jazz America Program on Voice of America enthuses: "The RTF reunion will be THE jazz event of 2008. Rarely does a magical event like this occur. I’m one of millions of fans who can’t wait!"
