200th Post...

Letter from a friend...

I had one of the worst days today that I've had in a very long time. Work was atrocious - and ended in tears. I set off to the gig I was going to by myself with a very long face and for once wearing no smile. But then, i got to the gig - a band I've liked since I was 11 - and the music got me - and the rhythm filtered through my blood and ran through my veins to every part of my body - and i moved, I danced, i went for it like there was never going to be a tomorrow. When the music gets me - I'm a girl possessed. and my smile was back. Bigger than the face it lives on. They rocked. they truly went off. they made me want to marry the music - sell my soul to the devil. But then, two encores and they were finished. But i wasn't. Ipod back in. And the party continued. I danced on the tube - the steely faced Londoners still didn't dare smile - even though i beamed at every one of them. 'Nutter' was clearly running through their mind. But why have any inhibitions. I wasn't drunk, i wasn't doing anything wrong. Simply spreading the love. At the train station the guard asked me to teach him to dance as i moved without limit, my whole body snaking around like i was being charmed. The train arrived and I danced the way home - around the pole - using all the space - totally moving like i was in the middle of a club. people stared, some looked stern, others smiled and looked intrigued. And i, well I was having just the best time possible. I had music. i had happiness, and I had an appreciation for life which they could only dream of. Now I'm in bed - the music still in my ears. The love still in my veins, the smile still splitting my face. Life's good.

Hope you can feel the love - it comes from a crazy girl, who's rambling yet again after midnight. but it'll make your toes taps and the corners of your mouth turn up. Enjoy it.

Mixed feelings...

Started my day with one of my elderly clients looking for her address book. She has two address books on her computer, the one in her email program and another, in pdf, that she has kept since the dawn of time... Once upon a time she printed it out and so today, mid flap about it being lost, she brought out her printed copy to show me incase it helped to find it. The printed copy was loose leaf and loked a lot like something that had been printed out just after the doors of noahs ark were closed. Well, we found her address book and she wanted to learn how to modify a few entries... so we went through it and looked up a few contacts - what really hit me was when she went a bit quiet and I turned to lok at her, she had a sad face on and was going through her contacts one at a time, "DEAD".....and this one, "DEAD".... another one, "Oh, she's alive, he's "DEAD"... she said the word DEAD with such contrast and it somehow sounded so final, which I guess it is... but it was a sad moment, like she expected to be amongst these people at some stage, soon. Life can be taken so suddenly.

Office dares

Richard Leonard says "I thought you might enjoy this picture. Bonus points for international newspapers - although being near a university or airport might reduce the scoring on these. Alternative "weighting" could be based on the currency of the newspaper, or inclusion of the victim's favourite footie team on the sports pages."

Starbucks to Give Ethiopian Farmers Their Fair Share

Starbucks to Give Ethiopian Farmers Their Fair Share

Each year, coffee companies make billions of dollars. Starbucks alone earned almost $5.8 billion in net revenues during the first three quarters of 2006.

Yet, for every cup of coffee Starbucks sells, poor farmers in coffee-growing countries like Ethiopia earn only about $.03.
Even worse, while Ethiopian farmers grow some of the finest name-brand coffees in the world - think Harar, Yirgacheffe, and Sidamo - they don't see the premium profits those names command among consumers.

Oxfam and a coalition of allies are asking Starbucks to sign this agreement. According to one coalition member, control of the name brands could increase Ethiopia's coffee export income by more than 25 percent - or $88 million annually. This money could go a lot way to help lift millions of Ethiopians out of poverty.

So please, help us convince Starbucks to sign this agreement with Ethiopia. Poor farmers deserve a fair share of the profits.

Fiver Film Club

Hello everyone,

Hope you're enjoying the lovely sunshine today. I'm emailing with some exciting news - the first screening of the first bit of my nuclear film.
I'm sure everyone already knows the story but just to recap, I went out to southwestern USA in February to film with the Navajo Indians about their experiences of uranium mining for the nuclear industry. This material will hopefully find its way into my longer documentary on nuclear power but in the meantime I have cut it down to a stand alone short film.
I will be showing this along with the Oscar-nominated 1979 film The China Syndrome at the launch night of a new regular film club I am setting up in conjunction with Balham Baptist Church. This will be an opportunity for people to see what I've been doing as well as raising further funds for the project. I would be really pleased if lots of people can make it down to support the event.

The details are as follows:

When: Saturday 19th May, 7.30pm
Where: Balham Baptist Church, 21 Ramsden Road, London SW12 8QX
Cost: £5 or £4 in advance If you'd like to get your ticket in advance you can do so by clicking below - once I've received the payment I'll email you a ticket to print out and bring along on the night.

Please forward this onto anyone else you think would be interested and it would be great to know if you're thinking of coming along, even if you don't want to buy a ticket first...

Thanks and hope to see you on 19th May.

Elbow wars?

Elbow wars over precious armrest space could become a thing of the past for flight passengers as airlines consider a new seating layout which would have some travellers facing the back of the plane.
British company the Premium Aircraft Interiors Group (PAIG) has developed a "ying-yang" seating pattern in which neighbouring seats face in opposite directions. The new layout removes the need to leave a gap between seats for an armrest under the traditional shoulder-to-shoulder seating plan.Instead, one person's shoulders would be in line with the neighbouring passenger's knees and each would have their own armrest.Passengers who find the thought of spending hours unable to avoid eye contact - and conversation - with their neighbour have also been considered.A privacy screen can be pulled out from the seat in front at eye level.

How to clean your digital cameras sensor (CMOS)

When any dust or other foreign matter sticks to the image sensor, it may show up aso a dark speck in images. To avoid this, follow the procedure below to clean the image sensor.
The image sensor is a very delicate component. If possible, you should have it cleaned at a Canon Service Centre. (so we can charge you a load and have your camera for a couple of weeks!)

Attention : Use the AC Adapter Kit ACK-E2 (sold separately) or a sufficiently charged battery to avoid having the power cut off while cleaning the sensor.
Attention :
During the sensor cleaning, never do any of the following that would turn off the power. If the power is cut off, the shutter will close and it may damage the shutter curtains and image sensor.
Attention : Do not turn the power switch to <>
Attention : Do not open the memory card slot cover. 3) Do not remove the battery.
Set the camera's Mode Dial to one of the "Creative Zone" modes before cleaning. When a "Basic Zone" mode is set, [Sensor cleaning] (Step 4 below) will not be displayed in the menu window.

1. Detach the lens from the camera.
2. Insert the DC coupler attached to the AC adapter or a fully charged battery into the battery compartment.
3. Set the power switch to <> and press the <> button to show the menu window.
4. Select the following from the menu shown in the image below:Press the <> button to jump to select the tab below. Then turn the Quick Control Dial to select [Sensor cleaning] and press the <> button. When the Mode Dial is set to the "Basic Zone" mode, [Sensor cleaning] will not be displayed. Set the Power switch to <> once. Change the Mode Dial to one of the "Creative Zone" modes and then restart the procedure from the step 3 above. If the battery is exhausted, a warning message will appear. In this case, recharge the batteries or use the DC coupler.
5. When the dialog box below appears, turn the Quick Control Dial to select [OK]. Then press the <> button.
The mirror will lock up and the shutter will open. [CLEAN] will blink on the LCD panel.
6. Use a rubber blower (commercially available) to carefully blow away any dust on the surface of the CMOS sensor.
Important: To avoid damaging the CMOS sensor, please note the following points.
NOTE:Do not insert the blower tip inside the camera beyond the lens mount. 2.) Do not use a blower that has a brush attached. 3.) Never use canned air or gas to clean the sensor.
7. When the dust has been cleared away, turn the power switch to <>.The shutter will close, and the mirror will come down.
Set the power switch to <> again. The camera is now ready to shoot.
The image sensor cleaning is now complete.
